Wandering Tummy in Maui: Pho Saigon 808

Pho Saigon 808 on Urbanspoon

Oh yes way! Saigon 808 that’s right! Just 2 days in Maui and my boyfriend was hankering for some Vietnamese food. Pho is a must for him.. It was 8pm in the evening and we were hunting for a Vietnamese restaurant in Lahaina. We had googled to see where the Vietnamese restaurants were and found 2 located near our hotel. We decided on Pho Saigon 808 due to the proximity, ratings, and closing time.

Pho Saigon 808 is located on Front street hidden within a plaza next to a Mexican restaurant. There was seating inside the small restaurant as well as patio seating on the deck just outside the restaurant. The deck is shared with the other restaurants in the area, just sectioned off with fences.

imageWe ordered a selection of dishes so that we could sample more of the menu. Pho Dac Biet, Bo Luc Lac, and Chicken dumplings.

Pho Dac Biet – mostly meatballs with some omasum on the side. The soup was clear. The flavour was not well developed or meaty enough for my liking. For the Vancouverites reading this, I would classify this as food court pho, not even on the level of Pho Hoa.
Pan Fried Chicken Dumplings with Black Vinegar dipping sauce – reminded me of what my mother makes
Bo Luc Lac – Stir Fried Beef with Onions and Rice – This was not bad, well flavored, but the meat was a bit on the chewy side

968ba74f2812197c2e9c11d7d168f6ccWe never learn. Every time we travel, we always end up at a Vietnamese restaurant, and every time, we are not satisfied. I think we’d be more satisfied with a instant bowl of pho instead of what we have found in restaurants that we have visited during our travels.
